Food blogs, dream jobs

I have really been enjoying The Traveler’s Lunchbox, a food and travel blog that I just discovered. It’s not only the good writing and photography that draws me there, but also envy of the author’s life–she’s a freelance food and travel writer who also has a PhD in linguistics.
When my students are good–as they […]

Iraq

Reading these excerpts from John McCain’s speech on foreign policy made me uncomfortable. I don’t know what the best thing to do about Iraq is–part of me wants the war to be over right away, for all the obvious reasons, and part of me feels like we made that mess and we’re responsible for […]

Weekend in Grenoble

Joe and I went to Grenoble for our long weekend. There was snow, as you can see, so Joe’s desire to hike in a snowy forest was finally satisfied. We hiked up to a river called–no joke–La Pissarde. There were waterfalls and snowballs.
Other moments:
(1) Tartiflette followed by chocolate fondue at La Fondue. […]

Concert au Brighton

This is my colleague Nathalie: English teacher by day, jazz singer by night. I have a lot of respect for her because she works hard to organize artsy projects for her students–acting, singing, drawing. (Also, she’s a good performer herself.) It’s good because there are no art or music classes at […]

Food and wine!

These barrels are in a cave in Nuits-Saint-Georges, and they are filled with wine from Pommard and the Hospices de Beaune. Both Beaune and Nuits-Saint-Georges have hospitals that own vineyards and sell wine to raise money. We went to the Hospices de Beaune’s wine auction in November, mostly to gawk at the prices […]

Tektonik

This article describes the recent dance craze in France, called the Tektonik.  There are some videos as well.  My students love this dance and talk about it all the time–I would have mentioned it earlier but I didn’t know how to describe it.  This is the description I have from my students:  ”Ben… tu te décoiffes… […]

Etsy

I have found some gorgeous jewelry on Etsy lately, like these gold leaf earrings and this willow branch bangle.
I have also discovered that it is possible to spend tens of thousands of dollars on Etsy, such as for this diamond ring. But if I were spending unbelievable amounts of money on jewelry from Etsy, […]

Barack Obama

Barack Obama’s speech on race was so good that just reading it made me sort of tear up. It would probably sound pretty hokey to my students, since they have no reason to feel proud of the United States, but my first urge was to show it to them. But they wouldn’t be […]

Gigote et fricote!

My favorite class and I are watching a film known in France as Ricky Bobby. I figured even if they hated it, they would at least have something to talk about.
They don’t think it’s that funny, of course, because they are just reading the subtitles. Sometimes they shoot me puzzled glances when I’m […]

Aww

This week’s Savage Love column was really good.
