That’s pretty awesome. I figured life was a drag over, but the shaker I wasn’t quite sure on. The French spin on English is certainly more interesting than the Japanese spin on it, which has always seemed to talk half an understanding of grammar and just run with it.

while france may use english in crazy ways, it’s got nothing on the english i’ve seen here in china. an example… a while ago in kunming, i saw a billboard for god knows what, that had been translated: paragenesis shares, altogether wins. (i couldn’t read the characters, so i’ve got no clue what it meant to say, and neither did my assistant program director who was equally befuddled).
also… when i was in the city of dali, there was a warning in my shower that advised me to be cautious of landslides… you certainly can’t make this stuff up.

Oh, sorry, I probably should have explained more in the first place: “shaker” and “life” are not French words. “Shaker” takes the English “shake” and makes it into a French verb by adding the R at the end.

You can see the verb in a different form in the URL at the bottom of the image: ShakeTaLife.com.

People here use English in interesting ways. I recently heard someone call a debit card, sometimes called la carte bleue in French, “la blue card.”

When my grandmother first drove in the US, shortly after she came over, she always told her kids that she was going to “make the big speed,” a literal translation of “faire la grande vitesse.” This is now the phrase of choice in my family when discussing velocity.

I agree with this whole-heartedly - sometimes i think about the combination of public school combined with an afterschool babysitter who was sweet and kind but was more than happy to fill me up with television and sugar, and how it affected me, slowed me down and quieted me and it makes me sad.
